Bike, or bike + liability?

Most policies cover only the bike. Throttle e-bikes need liability by law.

My own bikes, in Verona (07044)

I have two throttle e-bikes — one gets my kid to and from school, and the other replaces a car on the days my wife takes the train into the city and parks at Orange Station. A throttle bike counts as a motorized bicycle in NJ, so it legally needs liability insurance.

On July 22, 2026 I ran the exact same policy at four insurers — a $2,500 bike, $200 deductible, and the $25,000 liability the law requires. Here is what each one actually quoted:

Sundays quote for a $2,500 e-bike in Verona, NJ
Sundays$156/yr

Cheapest overall — but covers the bike only, no liability.

Simple Bike quote for a $2,500 e-bike in Verona, NJ
Simple Bike$164/yr

Cheapest that includes the $25k liability a throttle bike needs.

Velosurance quote for a $2,500 e-bike in Verona, NJ
Velosurance$181/yr

Comprehensive — bike + liability, all bundled.

Markel (direct) quote for a $2,500 e-bike in Verona, NJ
Markel (direct)$181/yr

Identical to Velosurance — because it's the same insurer underneath.

The range: $156–$181 a year. Notice Velosurance and Markel came back at the exact same $181 — because they’re the same insurer sold under two names. We ran all four ourselves and confirmed our pricing engine reproduces them, so you can see the range in one search instead of signing up four times.

Which bike do you have?

New Jersey treats a pedal-assist bike and a throttle bike very differently — and it decides whether you’re legally required to carry liability. If you’re not sure which yours is, these two summaries from NJ sources lay it out.
