Frequently asked
Is this a real, bindable insurance policy I can buy today?+
Not yet. insuremy.bike is in pre-launch — quotes are indicative and based on our open actuarial model. We are working through NJ DOBI filing with a licensed surplus-lines broker. The website exists now so we can build a community ahead of the July 2026 mandate; binding starts when filing closes.
What is the July 2026 NJ mandate?+
NJ Senate Bill S4834 requires every cyclist and e-bike rider on a public road to carry $35,000 of liability insurance for personal use and $70,000 for commercial use, effective July 1, 2026.
How is my premium calculated?+
Your ZIP code maps to one of NJ's 21 counties. We pull the expected annual loss per household for that county from our public NJ crash dataset, scale it to the NJ-mandated liability limit, add a property loss term equal to 2.5% of your bike value, multiply by 1.5 if the use is commercial, and divide by a 25% target loss ratio. Deductible discount is applied last, with a $120 minimum premium. Every constant lives in our open-source pricing module.
Why are quotes only valid in NJ?+
Two reasons: (1) the mandate that motivated the project is NJ-only, and (2) our actuarial model is calibrated against NJ-specific crash and exposure data. We will expand state-by-state as we acquire that data — drop your email on the waitlist if you ride elsewhere.
What's the maximum bike value you'll cover?+
$25,000 at launch. We're keeping the cap conservative until we have a year of bound policies on the books. If you ride something more expensive, the liability portion of the policy still meets the NJ mandate; the property side simply tops out at $25K.
Do you cover e-bikes?+
Yes — Class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes are eligible. Note that NJ S4834 specifically targets e-bikes that don't qualify as Class 1 or 2 low-speed electric bicycles. We'll surface a class-confirmation question during binding.
Will you call me or sell my email?+
No. Submitting the form gets you (1) the quote on screen, (2) one welcome email, and (3) one follow-up email after about two weeks. That's it. No agents, no third-party data sales.
Can I see the data behind the pricing?+
Yes — see the bike-insurance and bike-insurance-website repositories on GitHub for the model, the precomputed grid loaded into BigQuery (bike_insurance.dim_quote_grid), and the full pricing constants.
