How a bike insurance claim works
Email-first, photo-driven, no phone tree. We're aiming for first response inside 24 hours and an initial decision inside five business days. Here's the whole process — and the documentation habits that speed up a claim with any insurer, not just us.
The four steps
- Tell us what happened. Email claims@insuremy.bike with your policy number, the date, and a one-paragraph description. Attach photos of the bike, the scene, and any third-party documentation (police report, hospital triage sheet, witness contact).
- We acknowledge within 24 hours. A real human (one of us) replies, opens a claim file, and lists exactly what additional documentation we need. No call center.
- Triage and decision. Property claims under $2,000 are typically settled inside five business days from documentation. Liability claims involving a third party route through our broker partner — we will introduce them by name.
- Payout. Property settlements pay via ACH to the named insured within two business days of decision. Replacement-shop direct-pay is available on request for partner shops listed on the FAQ.
What makes any claim fast (do this before the loss)
- Serial number photographed and registered — proof of ownership is the #1 claim delay industry-wide.
- Purchase receipts (or photos of them) stored somewhere that isn't the bike bag.
- Component list for anything upgraded past stock — wheels especially.
- For theft: a police report filed within 24 hours. Insurers can't pay theft claims without one.
- For crashes: photos of the scene and the bike before anything is moved or repaired.

What claims teams are actually checking
Every insurer's claim review answers three questions: did the loss happen the way described (consistency), was it a covered peril (policy terms), and is the value right (documentation). Vague timelines and missing serial numbers stall question one; that's why the checklist above matters more than anything you do after the loss.

Theft prevention that actually works (ranked by evidence, not vibes)
Locks by security rating, the two-lock rule, registration, and why where you park matters more than what you spend. Written to keep you from ever needing a claim.
The airline damaged your bike. Now what?
The Montreal Convention caps airline liability near $1,900 regardless of your bike's value — and the claim windows are brutally short. The exact playbook, hour by hour.
Why does bicycle insurance exist at all?
Bikes got expensive, riders got liable, and homeowners policies never caught up. The honest case for — and against — a standalone bike policy.
