Bike registration checklist
The 15-minute documentation session that makes theft recovery and any insurance claim dramatically easier.
Record (photograph everything)
- Serial number — usually stamped under the bottom bracket
- Full bike, both sides, in good light
- Close-ups of components: drivetrain, wheels, cockpit, saddle
- Any distinguishing marks, scratches, or custom paint
- Yourself with the bike (ownership evidence)
- Purchase receipt or order confirmation
Register
- Bike Index (bikeindex.org) — free, national, checked by police and shops
- Project 529 (project529.com) — strong in some regions, also free
- Manufacturer registration — activates warranty and crash-replacement eligibility
- Local police registry if your city runs one
Store
- Save all photos to cloud storage, not just your phone
- Note the serial number in your password manager or notes app
- Email yourself a copy — searchable, timestamped, off-device
- Recheck after any major component upgrade (wheels especially)
